NaNoWriMo Week 3

I’m pleased to say that at the end of NaNo week 3 I’ve not only reached the fifty thousand word goal and crossed the finish line, but now have a complete first draft of the novel. It currently stands at 54,763 words. I’m hoping to add another twenty to thirty thousand words over the next couple of drafts.

For now, I’ll be taking a break from it so I can come back to it with fresh eyes. In some ways, the redrafting and editing seems more daunting. This is where the real craft of writing begins. My task now, is to choose the right words to describe the characters, setting, action and dialogue, and make an imaginary and fantastical world seem entirely believable. No pressure then. In the meantime, I intend to do some reading for pleasure, working my way through some of my very tall tbr pile, and I have some other ideas for future novels I want to develop and some non-fiction projects waiting in the wings.

I’ve enjoyed taking part in this year’s NaNoWriMo. It’s encouraged me to do a bit more social media as well as writing a new novel. Hopefully, I’ll keep it up. I should have lots of interesting discoveries to post as I continue to research the historical elements of the story. I may even post some excerpts.
